The alkloid know as Galantamine, which is extracted from such plants as the Caucasian snowdrop (Galanthus caucasicus), has some very excitingnootropic potential. This substance (also known as Nivalin, Razadyne, Reminyl,Lycoremine) is currently being prescribed in various parts of the world for treating Alzheimer’s and other memory impairments that are vascular in origin.
How does Galantamine work?
Galantamine is thought to illicit its nootropic effects on the brain via inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and the modulation of the alpha-7 nicotinic acetylcholine
receptors. In addition, it may also have neuroprotective functions by
free radical scavenging, stabilizing the mitochondrial membrane,
increasing Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), etc.
